PLASTIC SURGERY:
FORM AND FUNCTION
Plastic surgery—improving and restoring form and function—may be one of the world’s oldest healing arts. Derived from the ancient Greek word “plastikos,” which means to mold or give form, plastic surgery includes both the reconstructive and aesthetic subspecialties. In 2006, 16.2 million plastic surgery procedures were performed in the U.S. The goal of PLASTIC SURGERY: FORM AND FUNCTION, a major long-term exhibit at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago, scheduled to open during the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ 2008 annual meeting (October 31–November 5), is to fulfill the immense public interest in this significant and ever-growing medical field.
The exhibit will focus on the broad spectrum of work today’s plastic surgeons perform, including the latest instruments and equipment.

DIABETES:
A GLOBAL EPIDEMIC AND YOU Approximately 20.8 million children and adults in the United States—7 percent of the population—have diabetes. Whereas 14.6 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third of the affected population) are unaware that they have the disease. More people than ever are touched by diabetes as its prevalence grows to have an impact on more than 4,100 people who are diagnosed with it each day and those who care for them. The exhibit DIABETES: A GLOBAL EPIDEMIC AND YOU will provide the public with the most up-to-date information on prevention, treatment, and awareness, and will educate visitors on living with and managing diabetes, as well as caring for someone with the disease.
This new exhibit will be geared to an audience of culturally diverse families. School groups are also expected to be frequent visitors, along with professionals from all over the world.

THE
CUTTING EDGE:
ADVANCES IN GENETICS AND SURGERY, a major exhibit opening in the spring of 2008 at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago, will present a revolutionary development in medicine-the relationship of genetics and surgery. In today’s world the surgeon functions by including knowledge produced by the phenomenal discoveries in various scientific fields and by an increasing interaction with genetics. Over 900 genetic tests are now available to find genetic disorders, evolving imaging technologies are advancing diagnosis and treatment, and innovative new surgical techniques are being developed. As we are presently living in the golden age of genetics, the exhibit will highlight current developments, which have become so frequent and have such a high impact on patients.
Historical and contemporary instruments and medical equipment, as well as large-scale illustrated panel and three-dimensional models, will be used to present these topics to Museum guests. In addition, video presentations and interactive computer displays will engage and educate visitors. This long-term exhibit will remain on view for the next three years.
